The importance of eyes can hardly be exaggerated. It is, therefore, imperative to look after this precious possession of ours, our eyes, with care and passion.
- Foods that keep the eyes healthy.
- Vitamin A, C and E are beneficial for the eyes. Carrots and apples are an excellent source of Vitamin A. Citrus fruits such as oranges, kiwi, tomatoes, etc. are a great source of Vitamin C and the all natural sunshine provides us Vitamin E. "Amla", also called Indian gooseberry is excellent for your eyes. It is so naturally rich in Vitamin C. You can consume amla just like that or prepare a jam from it.
- Soaked almonds produce results. Soak about 7-9 almonds in tepid water for 3-4 hours. Drain the water and eat these soaked almonds along with the skin. Chew on them slowly and enough. An alternative is to peal the skin, blend the soaked almonds with milk and drink almond milk.
- Trifla is a herbal compound made up of three (tri+fla) herbs. This compound works magically for the health and care of the eyes. You should soak "trifla" and then splash the water on your eyes every morning and night. A mixture of "trifla" powder and sugar candy in equal proportions should be prepared and filled in a glass bottle. Take one spoon of this mixture, mix it with one spoon honey and consume this every morning. With 3 months of use of trifla in these two ways, your eyes will feel very healthy and you will notice an improvement in vision.
- Take raw almonds, fennel seeds and sugar candy in equal proportions (by weight) and grind them to make a powder. Store this prepared powder in a glass jar. Mix 2 spoons of this powder in a cup of milk and drink every morning and night. Regular consumption of this will improve your eyes health, vision, and even improve memory.
- Just like exercise is a must for our body, exercise is a must for eyes too. There are certain special exercises to relax and soothe the eyes specially after strenuous eye activity. Other than a complete exercise routine, we have given some exercises for working out and relaxing the eyes on our Eye Exercises page, and which if done regularly few times a day can even stabilize your eyeglass power.
- Good Reading habits for your eyes. There is no disputing that reading is one of the very best hobbies anyone can have. Here is a few things you must do while reading to prevent your eyes from getting strained.
- There should be sufficient light falling on your book. The light source should preferably be behind you or on your left.
- It is very common, specially amongst children, that once they get engrossed in reading, they even forget to blink. I know, blinking happens automatically and it is not that we remind ourselves whole day to blink. But trust me, I have seen that many kids do not blink enough while reading. Remind yourself to consciously blink a few extra times, every few words or sentences.
- You should make it a habit to just swirl your neck and look away from the book, for example, every time you turn a page.
- Do's and don'ts for computer, television, sewing, knitting, embroidery, etc.
- The upper edge of your computer monitor screen should be almost in line with your eyes. Adjust the height of your chair and monitor to achieve this alignment.
- There should not be complete darkness in the room when you are watching TV or working on the computer. A soft light is needed in the room. Make sure the light source is positioned such that there is no reflection off the screen.
- Look away at a remote spot in the room every few minutes and swirl your neck.
- Remember to blink extra when engaged in any of these or similar activities.
