  1. What is Obesity?


    About 33% of American adults fall into the obese category. As you might have heard in recent news, the number of obese children is at an all time high. It is important to make conscious efforts on every individual's part to get rid of obesity if you are obese and to prevent yourself from falling into the category if you are overweight.

    Obesity is a condition when your body weight is more than what is considered healthy weight for your height. An index called BMI index is used to determine if an individual is obese or not.

    Not only do obese people lose their briskness and agility but in addition, obesity is the host to a whole world of medical conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, stroke, unbalanced good and bad fats, and many more ailments. When it comes to our body, there is no doubt lighter is better.

    To find out if you are obese or not, first you need to calculate your BMI index by entering your height and weight in the calculator below. Once you know your BMI value, then look at the chart below to see in which category you fall into.

  3. Causes of Obesity


    It is not hard at all to become obese, more so, thanks to the progress of mankind. Gone are the days when people used to hunt, travel for miles in search of food and shelter. We still travel for miles to our work place but the only element of health is the short walk to the car. Talk about being spoilt, most of us go in circles trying to get the closest parking spot to our destination. That is just one example and we just need to look around us and there are numerous such examples. The causes of obesity are so obvious:

    • Unplanned unhealthy quick meals due to time constraint.
    • Fast food (for your convenience, "Drive through", conserve all the calories!!)
    • Oh! how can we forget our most favorite, buddies "the television", the couch and snacking while watching our favorite programs.
    • Smoking and excessive drinking.
    • Undue mental stress
    • At workplace, so many people these days sit in front of the computer for most of the 8 hours of the work day.
    • Amongst the "modern office" at work, "idiot box" at home and "car" between the two places, is there any surprise why exercise or physical activity is grossly lacking?!
